Welcome to New Haven: The Journey to Enlightenment by Rashan Bryant is a riveting but simple visionary fiction book with many metaphysical elements, which tells the mystical story of Malachi, a young man who together with his friend Pete and sister Lily is tasked with an incredulous mandate of saving millions of lives from an unexpected villain, Malachi’s twin brother, from another world.
The tale kicks off with a series of beehive activities taking place in Malachi’s office, ranging from repeatedly buzzing phones to a team of sales workers whose attitudes keep getting shot at by their crafty and scheming boss, Johnny Slick. On this particular day, the protagonist has been tasked by Slick with another unfair assignment which leaves him sad and disgruntled. He feels misused and despised and can’t wait for the day to end. Unfortunately, luck doesn’t seem to be on his side when a rather old figure approaches him on his way home and begs to be heard. Malachi can’t help but pity himself.
A series of back-and-forth arguments with the poorly dressed old man agitates Malachi even more, until a rather interesting proposal changes his attitude towards him. The old man who identifies himself as Sebastian offers to pay Malachi off if he accepts to pay attention to what he has to say. However, the excitement quickly diminishes when the old man reveals disturbing and mesmerizing details about the protagonist’s personal life and purpose. This is just the tip of the iceberg for this young man who always saw himself as an ordinary human being. He can’t quite comprehend the voluminous surprising task that awaits him and his two friends.
Welcome to New Haven: The Journey to Enlightenment is a novel that thrills from beginning to end, with the element of writing expertise and creativity prowess on full display. The author boldly explores religion and philosophical beliefs in relation to the Creator in a way that’s unique and one which easily captures readers’ minds. I found the dialogue among the characters quite intriguing and relatable, especially Sebastian’s, whose knowledge and mystical abilities in regard to the supernatural world and dimensions are formidable.
Bryant aptly brings out the issues of forgiveness, the importance of reflection and responsibility, and the dire need to find balance in life, a practice that improves one’s wholesome well-being by offsetting negative events, rewarding you with joy, peace, and vibrancy which take center stage. This is a great fiction book that are thought-provoking and revolutionary and certainly deserves to be on everyone’s bookshelf.
