In the fast-paced, technology-driven, 24-hour news cycle of a world we live in, it’s easy to become impatient. When most things can be at a person’s fingertips in an instant, it’s no wonder patience is no longer a virtue, but it should be. At least, that’s the argument that author Naomi Hafford-Smith makes in her non-fiction, self-help book, Worth the Wait. Hafford-Smith’s book serves as an instructional guide for the anxious Christian as it maps out a way to make peace with uncertainty as a part of God’s plan.
The book is divided into three parts: “Purpose,” “Plan,” and “Promise,” and each subheading has around five or so chapters that outline the steps to change. For example, in the planning section the reader learns how to use tools such as written visuals, spoken vows, and to make an active plan that will better suit their purpose. Using scripture to illustrate and back-up her points, Hafford-Smith details how patience is a key part of faith. With clever acronyms like “W.A.I.T,” which stands for “Willingly Allow Intimate Time,” she creates helpful tools the reader can use and adapt to their everyday life as needed.
The book’s focus on actionable items is one of its key strengths, and Hafford-Smith’s straightforward writing style effectively delivers the information. The author also uses personal anecdotes to show how her plan works and has reaped change in her own life. These inclusions serve as a source of inspiration for the reader.
A quick but effective read, Worth the Wait will appeal to Christian audiences who are looking for guidance and introspection on how to change their life through faith.
